Audio & Music
Cocoon Shell isn’t just a visual experience — it sounds great too. From satisfying click sounds as you navigate your grid to chill background music while you browse your library, there’s a full audio system you can customize.
Sound Effects
Cocoon plays subtle sound effects as you interact with the interface — things like:
- Navigation clicks as you move between games
- Select/confirm sounds when you choose something
- Back sounds when you cancel
- Folder open sounds
- Game launch sounds
- Screen swap sounds
- And more (about 25 different sound effects in total!)
Adjusting Sound Settings
Head to Settings → System & Advanced → Sound Settings to:

- Turn sounds on or off entirely.
- Adjust the volume of sound effects.
- Enable or disable haptic feedback (vibration on interactions).
Custom Sounds
Want to replace the built-in sounds with your own? It’s easy — you don’t need to mess with any folders:
- Go to Settings → System & Advanced → Sound Settings.
- Scroll down to the list of sound effects (Select, Back, Launch, Navigate, Folder Open, etc.).
- Highlight the sound you want to change and press A — a file picker opens.
- Choose any audio file from your device (OGG, MP3, WAV all work).
That’s it — your custom sound replaces the default for that action immediately. To reset any sound back to the default, press X on it instead.
There are 19 customizable sound effects in total:
| Sound | When it plays |
|---|---|
| Select | You confirm/select something |
| Back | You go back or cancel |
| Launch | A game launches |
| Navigate | You move between tiles |
| Folder Open | You open a folder |
| Discord Open / Close | Discord panel opens or closes |
| Screen Swap | Screens swap on a dual-screen device |
| Grid Zoom In / Out | You zoom the grid in or out |
| Reorder Pickup / Place | You pick up or place a tile in edit mode |
| Edit Mode | You enter edit mode |
| Pop | General UI pop |
| Slider Increase / Decrease | You adjust a slider |
| Saving / Saving Complete | A save operation starts or finishes |
| RetroAchievements | Achievement-related notification |
You can also get custom sounds through themes — many community themes include their own sound packs.
Background Music
Cocoon can play background music while you browse your library. There are two modes:
Time-Based Music
This mode automatically changes the soundtrack based on the time of day. Cocoon comes with 6 default tracks that shift throughout the day — softer, sleepier tunes at night and brighter, more upbeat ones during the day.
You can customize the schedule and use your own tracks:
- Go to Settings → System & Advanced → Sound Settings.
- Set the music mode to Time Based.
- You’ll see a list of time slots, each with a track assigned to it.
- To change a track, highlight the time slot and press A — a file picker opens so you can choose any audio file from your device.
- To adjust the time a track starts playing, press Left/Right on its entry (shifts in 10-minute increments).
- To remove a time slot, press X.
- Use the Add Schedule button to create new time slots.
There’s also a Reset to Default button if you want to go back to Cocoon’s built-in time schedule.
Playlist Mode
If you’d rather just listen to your own music collection:
- Set the music mode to Playlist.
- Press the Add button to open a file picker and choose tracks from your device.
- Choose between In Order or Shuffle playback.
- Reorder tracks with Left/Right on any entry, or remove them with X.
Music Volume
Music volume is separate from sound effect volume, so you can have quiet background tunes with crisp UI clicks, or vice versa.
Smart Behavior
Cocoon’s music system is pretty clever about when to play and when to be quiet:
- During loading sounds (like when downloading art), the music volume dips automatically so you can hear what’s happening.
- When you launch a game, the music stops so it doesn’t compete with your game’s audio.
- When the screen turns off or Cocoon goes to the background, music pauses.
- On dual-screen devices, music is managed per-window so it doesn’t get confused about which screen is active.
Theme Audio
Themes can include both custom sound effects and custom music. When you apply a theme, you can choose whether to use its sounds, its music, both, or neither — it’s completely up to you.
